Matching a color without numbers

Five target swatches a round, three sliders — hue, saturation, lightness — and no numbers until you commit. You push the mix until it melts into the target and lock it in; only then does the reveal show both HSL triples, how far apart they were, and which axis carried the miss — “biggest miss: lightness — yours lighter by 8”. The five run easy, then vivid, then muted, ending near-grey where the eye drifts furthest and the hint warns that hue has stopped mattering. A recap then lines all five pairs up with their scores.

Mixing well means splitting one impression into three judgements, and the reveal says which of the three you got wrong — most mixes fail on lightness, not hue. Nothing here is eased for hardware, because nothing here is a stroke: the eye that reads a colour is the same eye behind a pen, a trackpad or a thumb. What hardware does get is a way to enter the value you meant — ±1 steppers on both sides of each slider, plus the arrow keys, so an exact hue is reachable even on a phone track carrying a couple of degrees per pixel.

What ΔE measures here

Both colors are converted from HSL through sRGB, linear RGB and XYZ into Lab, then compared with CIE76 ΔE. That conversion is the whole judge — a formula, not a model, so the same pair of colors always scores the same number. A ΔE of 2 or under is below what the eye can pick apart and takes a full 100. Above that the score falls in a straight line to zero, and the zero point scales with the target's own chroma: about ΔE 45 on a vivid color, about 20 on a near-grey. That is what keeps a 10° hue error costing about the same wherever it lands. The first two items carry a little extra room, so the warm-up is a real win. The round is the mean of the five.
